Wide movie frame showing two clay characters and their surroundings

Download a six-shot storyboard

A printable A4 sheet with six frames for planning a short film. Sketch a shot in each box and note the action, sounds and timing underneath.

PDF · A4 · Six shots per sheet. Print in portrait orientation using your PDF viewer’s A4 or Fit setting. Use another sheet when the story needs more room.

Turn an idea into six shots

  1. Introduce the place. Use a wide shot to show where the story happens.
  2. Meet the character. Show what they are doing.
  3. Change one thing. Add a new object, sound or visitor.
  4. Show the reaction. A close-up and a pause can make a small movement clear.
  5. Resolve it. Let the character do something about the surprise.
  6. Finish. Choose the final picture and plan a title or end credits.

Stick figures are enough. Planning helps you decide what to make before you spend time animating.

Before you animate

  • Secure the camera, stage and lights.
  • Check focus and take a test frame.
  • Keep lighting consistent and use onion skinning to judge each move.
  • Play back short sections as you work.
  • Save your editable project; export a movie when you want to share the finished film.
